The UK boasts so many options for a romantic weekend, it can be hard to choose. Stroll hand-in-hand on cobbled streets beneath overhanging Tudor galleries, feast together on the finest of food in a grand Manor in Oxfordshire, or share a rickshaw through the brightly lit streets of Soho: special memories to last a lifetime are just waiting to be made.

Best for foodies
There’s nothing like top quality cuisine and fine vintage wine to fan the flames of romance. The Manoir Aux Quat’ Saisons is a gorgeously tranquil manor house set in 17th century walled gardens in which an array of organic ingredients is nurtured especially for your plate. Multi-Michelin-starred chef Raymond Blanc anticipates your every wish, creating a gastronomic experience to be savoured at each turn. Wines are expertly matched with the food, and there is a choice of dining rooms, from the formal to the more relaxed patio with garden views. And, if you need to sleep off you foodie indulgences they have several cosy rooms in the main house available for guests. The surrounding Oxfordshire countryside offers theatre-going and shopping, horse-riding and fishing. Le Manoir is unsurprisingly very popular and hotel deals in UK food hotspots like this one get snapped up quickly. So plan well ahead if it’s for a special anniversary

Best for culture creatures
London is a romantic city in all seasons, whether you’re taking in the artistry of Turner at the Tate, or rustling a bag of roasted chestnuts by the Thames. For thrills, try a high-speed boat tour on the river, where you’ll be especially pleased to have someone to hold on to. Boats leave at a pier next to the London Eye, and take in all the sights along the river. Afterwards you can relax in a private champagne capsule on the London Eye, or just hold hands and stroll up Parliament Hill on Hampstead Heath, which is free and offers an equally stunning vista. Later, seek out sultry saxophone sounds in Soho, where venues such as Ronnie Scott’s and Jazz After Dark offer casual but chic spaces to melt away by candlelight, and are surrounded by livelier entertainments should you still seek to party the night away. The ultimate way to get back to your hotel has to be a rickshaw ride through the capital’s brightly-lit historic streets.

Best for outdoors
There’s no need to “wander lonely as a cloud” to stumble across a host of golden daffodils, buttercups and forget-me-nots. The Lake District offers some of Britain’s quaintest lakeside spots alongside its grandest valley views. But this wonderfully picturesque part of the UK also offers some of the greatest walks and scrambles in the country. Try the Langdale valley, where you can climb Crinkle Crags and Bowfell, offering views of all the giant fells in the Lake District. You can sample a glass of ale or fine scotch at the Hiker’s Pub at the Old Dungeon Ghyll after your walk. And there’s no need to sacrifice comfort for camping either. The latest ‘glamping’ offering from Long Valley Yurts will keep everybody cosy and warm: the local site offers sheeps’ wool-insulated yurts with Moroccan rugs and lanterns, and comfortable beds of course.

Many travelers planning a trip to London will have an important question to consider when booking their tickets – should I fly into Gatwick or Heathrow airport?

Of London’s 5 airports, Gatwick and Heathrow are the two largest and busiest, with thousands of passengers arriving and departing each day. Most international carriers and international flights to and from London operate out of these terminals. So which airport should you choose when you fly into or out of London?

If you have a choice of the two, there are a number of factors to consider. Here is some basic information on each airport to help you determine which airport is best suited to your holiday and travel needs.

Heathrow Airport

Heathrow is located 15 miles west of Central London, and is the world’s busiest international airport.

Two Piccadilly Line tube stations serve the airport – the underground tube is the cheapest way to get to or from all London airports.

Travelers can also choose from two train services – the Heathrow Connect and the Heathrow Express. There are also National Express buses to deliver passengers to and from London.

If you’d like to drive to the airport there is also a range of Heathrow airport parking options to choose from – long stay, short stay, business, valet as well as a number of pick up and drop off zones.

Gatwick airport

Gatwick is located 30 miles south of Central London, and is widely regarded as smaller and better organised than Heathrow.

An efficient monorail makes the 2-minute journey between the two terminals.

The Gatwick Express links the South Terminal with Victoria. It’s a non-stop 30 minute journey that runs every 15 minutes.

Southern Trains also run services to Victoria via East Croydon and Clapham Junction, leaving four times an hour.

easyBus is another transport option, offering low-cost frequent airport transfer service non-stop from London and Gatwick with prices from £2. Buses depart every 15 minutes at peak times and run throughout the day and night from both North and South terminals to Earls Court/West Brompton in central London.

If you want to drive to the airport, there are a number of Gatwick airport parking options to choose from – whether you need a short or longer term arrangements.

Frequent flyers are divided on their preference for Heathrow or Gatwick. For many, the advantage of choosing Heathrow is that you can buy a travel card at the airport to cover you for your entire London trip. For others, Gatwick’s smaller size and better organisation makes it easier to navigate. It often takes less time to clear customs at Gatwick than Heathrow, making it a quick and hassle-free airport experience.

If you’re flying into or out of London, consider which airport better suits you. Remember, if you are travelling through both terminals, Gatwick and Heathrow are 40 miles apart, so make sure you give yourself at least a 2 hour connection time to make the trip between the two.

What’s your preference? Gatwick or Heathrow?

Well it is coming up to the end of the year and I am thinking of what I can do for my next upcoming charity challenge.

Unfortutely it can’t be too active, well by that I mean I can’t do any repetitive knee movements (well not for the next 6 months). I injured my knee training for the South Downs Randonnee in 2007 and I ended up having to have a lateral release, real life example here. I’ve had to have one operation and am waiting on the other now, with a 12 month recovery period. Anyway the South Downs Randonnee is a 100 mile mountain bike ride from Winchester to Eastbourne across the south downs way and has to be finished in around 12 hours.

My second big event was climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa which was simple amazing. It is just short of 6000m and took 7 days to complete the climb. I’m one of the above in the photo, that was an additional bet for a few additional pounds.

But now I am stuck for what to do? So far I have thought of maybe climbing Mount Cho Oyo, or infact summiting any mountain naked, walking the Bering Straight, or canoeing the Amazon, your ideas and suggestions below please.

Last weekend Dorota and I had an amazing stay in the luxurious Milestone hotel. The hotel was named after the cast iron milestone that still stands in its original position next to the hotel.

We had a fantastic room which was on split floors, the lower smaller floor had a chaise longue and small eating area within the bay with large windows allowing us to overlook Kensington Palace and the green grass of Hyde Park. There was great view of the park from both the upper and lower floors, but unfortunately it was raining rather hard so we didn’t make the morning run around the park trails.

We were immediately amazed by the service from the moment we walked in. From being called your name at all times with such friendly staff and a hand written welcome letter from the hotel’s manager Andrew Pike, it is this sort of attention to detail that allowed the Milestone to be voted for the best service in the world and No.1 British hotel by Conde Nast.

The hotel is grade 2 listed and was originally built as two townhouses, the first known, Kensington House was built around 1689. It is amazing to think how big these houses would have been, to be able to be converted into a hotel which houses 45 bedrooms, 12 suites and 6 two bedroom apartments! AND this doesn’t include the spa, swimming pool, gym, kitchens, bars and entrance halls etc.

We didn’t get to try the internal Cheneston’s restaurant as we were hungry for a nice prime fillet steak. The concierge recommended Brasserie Chez Gerard which was a perfect choice as a) The steak was absolutely fantastic and b) It was only a 2 minute walk along Kensington High Street.

From the hotel all the main museums were only a short walk away so we decided to go and visit the National History Museum. Even after about 10 trips there I am still amazed by the dinosaur skeletons which are still in amazing condition after millions of years. Unfortunately we couldn’t visit the new Darwin Exhibition as it’s not opening until Friday this week. Due to the time it took to go around we were a bit too tired to see the Wildlife photographer of the year exhibition so we need to plan a return visit shortly. Maybe we can coincide this with Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland Outdoor Ice Skating

Well this can be seen as a highly debatable subject area, and even to me it has many grey areas which I am unsure upon. I finally got my speeding fine through, thanks go out to Wiltshire Safety Camera Partnership. After my court case which I plead guilty to by post… 4 points and a £205 fine.

There is some very interesting information at Safespeed and at abd.org.

The story started on the 24 September 2005 when on my way to a friends wedding in Cirencester in Wiltshire. I could even remember the recent M4 protests that were happening recently at the time over the speed cameras on this road.

It started when Wiltshire Safety Camera partnership illegally imposed 5,600 drivers £336,000between them in fines and were made by order of court to refund all the fines given.

Obviously this local company had just lost nearly half a million pounds and had to make it up. But instead of targeting the areas where road injuries and fatalities occur, on local town roads where children and pedestrians are prone to be. They decided to spend the biggest amount of their resources on the M4.

Reasons for this could be the fact that the Wiltshire Safety Camera Partnership need local public backing to operate and if they only fined local drivers their backing would sharply drop. So for a quick and easy way to claim back all their money they lost they thought they would target one of the safest roads in Europe the M4.

Anyway enough of the background, whether or not the cameras should be there or not is a matter for the public to decide. The fact of me speeding on the M4 and getting caught by a speed camera is fair and square, however I duly insist that my speeding was not a danger to myself nor other road users and the fact that I honestly believe Wiltshire Safety Camera Partnership are there ONLY for revenue generating and not for public safety. If they were there for public safety they wouldn’t be sneaky and use an unmarked van! I was actually following other traffic at the same speed, where the vehicle in front actually instantly slowed down almost causing an accident. So when does a Wiltshire Safety Camera Partnership white van with no markings or signage become a road safety device… I have no idea.

If they want to protect road safety I don’t understand why they don’t use marked vehicles and at least target areas which are accident prone.

They have taken appropriate action to ensure that such mistakes are not repeated… what ever that means, and have given me a complimentary stay including breakfast.

I am really pleased with this as it was quite expensive to stay there and was a shame that I had an unlucky series of events. I do honestly belive it was a one off and look forward to my second visit.

This weekend I went to London and stayed at the Apex City Hotel near Tower Bridge. The hotel looked fantastic.

But unfortunately from the moment of booking nothing went as expected from a four star hotel. A few of these issues are minor but over the course of the weekend just added up and fuelled my discontent.

The most influential event in writing a complaint letter to the Apex City Hotel in London, was early Sunday morning I was arguably awoken by the hotel fire alarm. This isn’t the reason I am ranting, I am frustrated by the way the incident occurred and the handling of this situation.

On this Sunday morning the fire alarm was set off. However in the room I was sleeping in, 318, this noise seemed to be coming from outside in the distance such as a car alarm. At not one moment did I think it was the fire alarm! It seemed too quiet. So after around thirty five minutes of the alarm ringing I decided to ring reception as I was starting to have second thoughts that maybe something indeed is wrong. Expecting to hear that it’s just a car alarm outside and the police have been informed. I was informed to leave the room immediately there is a risk of a fire.

After leaving the room I realised that the entrance I came through was now blocked off, and were puzzled on how to exit the building. These were the fire doors which had automatically shut, however there was no clear indication that this was indeed the way out, nor any sign saying to push the doors for exit. I always expected in times like this that it would be soo easy to find your way out but I was wrong.

After I realised how to get out of the building and quickly passed down the stairs I was bypassed the fire brigade coming up. I then went across the road and stood with all the other guests opposite the hotel.

At no point was I told what was happening and no head count took place. Seemingly I wasn’t the only guest with the problem of the volume of the alarm, as several other guests came down after I had.

All of us are extremely fortunate that this wasn’t a real fire, I honestly feel if it had have been there would have been a real disaster at hand and our lives would have been in danger.

I would like to know why there is not an automated phone call from the fire alarm system which is secondary to the alarm, with a recorded message to inform you of a potential risk?

Why staff members didn’t ensure that all guests were out of the rooms?
Why a headcount didn’t take place?
Why an explanation of what was happening was given?
And of course how such an alarm could be so quiet in certain rooms?
I am completely mesmerised by how the staff at this hotel could possibly be so unorganised in the event of a fire, it was obvious no one knew what to do.

After all of this I couldn’t have what I wanted for breakfast nor had any hot water, the fire alarm had tripped off the gas.

AND THEN… on checking out I was told by the girl at the reception desk when trying to settle my bill in these exact words, “You will need another method of paying as the credit card machine is not working”.

I felt this to be extremely rude and her entire attitude towards guests this day astonishing.

I explained to her that I had opened my account on my credit card and this being the only form of payment I have. Where she replied “well lets hope that your lucky” before snatching the card off me and trying it in the machine. I tried explaining to her that this is the only form of payment I have, and what am I supposed to do if the machine is out of order? She then starting moaning to me about how all the guests are unhappy this morning… this is not the kind of service I expect in a local bed and breakfast let alone a four star hotel in London.

I feel that no one should be spoken to like this, especially in front of other guests about myself not being able to pay the bill, which was very embarrassing.

I do feel that my experience at this hotel was probably a one off due to the situation, and maybe the extra stress the staff was under. But none the less the staff should be better trained to handle these situations.

Complaint letter on its way…

Well last night I went to the Komedia club in Brighton, and went to the Tag Comedy night.

“coming on to the pitch as a substitute and getting put straight in goal for a penalty”, “doing all the work with the foreplay and not getting any actual sex”.

Argus interviews Stephen Grant.

It was fantastic and Milton Jones was the star of the show but of course the regular Stephen Grant was excellent too once he got warmed up. The other top comedians there were Rusell Howard and Ben Norris.

There was no compere and it was a totally new concept in stand up comic. Having four of the best UK circuit comedians on stage coming on and off the stage by tagging each other was excellent. It worked by quite simply one comedian doing his standup and as soon as another comedian thought of a link between what the other just said he would then get up and take over. So any act can bring on any other act, in any other order.<

The performance was a combination of their normal comedy routines and interactions with the crowds, but had no fixed time limits and no running order. So they could be up there for 2 minutes or 20!

The night was absolutely fantastic, the food was excellent and hope its on again soon!

Komedia, Brighton
From 8:30pm
Price: £8.00/£6.00

Well have to stereotype here but they are all <del datetime="2005-12-06T09:18:51+00:00">wankers</del>. Actually they are not all like that at all, just the ‘Park & Ride’ bus driver this morning. Who waited for another lady and I to get to the doors of the bus and then drive off and close the doors whilst moving… He was so lucky that I was freezing cold and couldn’t run, I was visualising many ways of dragging him from the vehicle and…. Better not self incriminate myself, as it is against my human rights.

And to piss me off even more I found out yesterday that I didn’t get the converted church in Kemptown. The owner decided to take the lower offer which was £2000 less and I was able to pay cash. Apparently he is a very honest person and felt that he should take the other offer as they put it in first. But what really annoys me is that the girl from Kendrick Property Services couldn’t let me in the first time I went to see the place as the door was broken, so in fact I would have been the first person to make the offer.

Oh well shit happens I suppose.
